Why we started with vetting

Most home service directories will list anyone who signs up and pays. That's easy to build and it's also why homeowners don't trust these sites. We decided to do the opposite: start small, check every contractor ourselves, and only expand once we can keep that standard up.

What "vetted" means here

Before any contractor's pricing goes live on LocalHomePro, we confirm two things directly with the relevant licensing body and their insurance carrier: that their license is active, and that their general liability coverage is current. We don't take a screenshot or a copy of a certificate as proof. If a license lapses or coverage drops, that contractor stops receiving estimate requests until it's fixed.

We check again periodically, not just once at signup. Insurance lapses and license renewals happen, and a one-time check at onboarding wouldn't catch that.

How the pricing works

Every estimate you get is built from that specific contractor's real rates, not a generic number we made up. For roofing, that means the tear-off cost, shingle cost, underlayment, and every other line item comes from an actual rate card the contractor gave us. We add up what the job costs, we don't mark up the visible price beyond that. If a contractor wants to offer an upsell or a different material, that's a conversation you have with them directly once they reach out.

Where we are today

Right now LocalHomePro covers roofing in Sioux Falls, SD and nearby communities like Harrisburg, Brandon, and Tea, through one vetted contractor: Unlimited Enterprises, LLC. Sprinkler repair estimates are live too, though we're still confirming a vetted contractor for that category. That's a deliberate choice. We'd rather get each category right with one contractor first than launch five at once and stretch our ability to actually verify anyone. Gutter cleaning, window washing, and junk removal are still planned, and we'll add them as we find contractors who meet the same bar.
